Lagos, Portugal Travel Guide: Beaches, Cliffs & the Algarve Coast

Lagos earns its reputation as one of the best beach destinations in Europe without really trying. The coastline here is extraordinary — towering ochre limestone cliffs, hidden sea caves, pristine beaches tucked into coves, all bathed in the golden light of the southwestern Algarve.
Ponta da Piedade is the headliner: a dramatic rock promontory with sculptural sea arches, grottoes, and turquoise water. Take a kayak tour through the sea caves — you paddle inside the rock formations and the light is unreal. The golden hour here is genuinely something.
The beaches vary beautifully: Praia Dona Ana is the classic postcard shot, Meia Praia is the long flat strand ideal for swimming, and Praia do Camilo rewards a steep staircase descent with one of the most beautiful small coves on the coast.
Lagos old town, within its 16th-century walls, is compact and charming. The food scene punches above its weight — fresh grilled fish, cataplana (traditional Portuguese seafood stew), and excellent local wine. Cape Sagres — the southwestern tip of continental Europe — is 30 minutes west and worth a day trip.
